I love the gospel! I love the church! I love the aspect of service, fellowship and god forsaken love that the church embodies! I just finished reading a book by Miss Sheri Dew. This woman is so amazing! She is living the fear that a lot of unmarried women in the church face. Will we ever get married?!?! If we don't get married are we an abomination to the Lord? Are we taking the whole plan of salvation in vein just because we haven't found someone yet?! It just puts things into perspective for me knowing that Sheri is a wonderful member of the church, and yes she is unmarried. It does not change the good she has done in the growth and development of the church! She is truly amazing! I just thought I'd share some of the great insights I gleaned from her book No Doubt About It.
"Prophets have admonished us to be in but not of the world, to forsake the world and turn our hearts to Jesus Christ, who promised, 'In this world your joy is not full, but in me your joy is full.' (D&C 101:36) And for good reason. For in this mortal sojourn, wrestling as we do with the natural man's cravings for the enticement of the world, it can be easy to find ourselves lured away from the light of Christ by the adversary's blinding glare. Satan brilliantly blurs the line between the eternal things of God, and temporary, superficial, creations of man. As President Spencer W. Kimball taught: 'If we insist on spending all of our time and resources building up for ourselves a worldly kingdom, that is exactly what we will inherit.' How often are we focused on pursuing the so-called good life that we lose sight of eternal life? It is the fatal spiritual equivalent of selling our birthright for a mess of pottage. 'where our treasure is, there will your heart be also.' (Matthew 6:21) 'For what is a man profited, if he shall gain the whole world, and lose his own soul?' (Matthew 16:26)"
"If you expect glory, intelligence, and endless lives, LET THE WORLD GO." President Joseph F. Smith
"If the world is going to be saved, we have to do it...No other people in the history of the world have...received a...more compelling mandate than we [have]...and we'd better be getting at it." Gordon B. Hinkley
"Do you want to be happy? Forget yourself and get lost in this great cause. Lend your efforts to helping people...Work to lift and serve His sons and daughters. You will come to know a happiness that you have never known before...Let's get the cankering, selfish attitude out of our lives....and stand a little taller...in the service of others." Gordon B. Hinkley
"Satan never goes on vacation. He never sleeps." Harold B. Lee
"The nearer we get to our heavenly Father, the more we are disposed to look with compassion on perishing souls." Joseph Smith
"You are an essential part of the church, a most important part of it. It could not function properly without you. You provide inspiration. You provide balance. You constitute a vast reservoir of faith and good works. You are an anchor of devotion and loyalty and accomplishment. No one can gainsay the great part you play in the onward rolling of this work across the earth." Gordon B. Hinkley
"God is the hardest taskmaster I have known on this earth, he tries you through and through. And when you find that your faith is failing or your body is failing you, and you are sinking, he comes to your assistance somehow or other and proves to you that you must not loose faith and that he is always at your beck and call...So I have found. I cannot really recall a single instance when at the eleventh hour, he has forsaken me."Mahatma Gandhi "Grand is the privilege of every Latter-day Saint...to have the manifestations of the spirit every day of our lives...[so] that we may know the light and not be groveling continually in the dark." Lorenzo Snow
"There has never before been more expected of the faithful in such a short period of time than there is of us. Never before on the face of the earth have the forces of evil and the forces of good been as well organized...The final outcome is certain-the forces of righteousness will win. But what remains to be seen is where each of us...will stand in the battle-and how tall we will stand...Great battles can make great heroes and heroines." Ezra Taft Benson
"This life is a test. It is also a glorious privilege."
"The safest road to Hell is the gradual one-the gentle slope, soft underfoot, without sudden turnings, without milestones, without signposts."C.S. Lewis (Screwtape Letters)
"The cruelest thing you can do to a human being is to make him forget that he or she is the son or daughter of a king." Truman G. Madsen
"I wish to say, for the benefit of our posterity who may read this history, whatever you do, work with as much determination to secure enough to keep you for the eternity. Do not be slack in your duties. The gospel is true. We must always be found defending it. But yea more, we must be found teaching it, by word and something much more noticeable, by our every action. We are children of God, but to be a joint-heir with Jesus Christ, we must take into our lives the attributes he had." Grandma Dew
"Become a vast army with enthusiasm for this work!" Gordon B. Hinkley
"It is a serious thing to live in a society of possible gods and goddesses, to remember that the dullest and most uninteresting person you talk to may one day be a creature which...you would be strongly tempted to worship...It is in light of these overwhelming possibilities, it is with the awe and circumspection proper to them, that we should conduct all our dealings with one another...There is no ordinary people. You have never talked to a mere mortal. Nations, cultures, arts, civilizations-these are mortal, and their life is to ours as the life of a gnat. But it is immortals whom we joke with, work with, marry, snub, exploit-immortal horrors of everlasting splendors." C. S. Lewis
"When you have a testimony of Jesus Christ your life can never be the same again." Grandma Dew
"Though we have rightly applauded our ancestors for their spiritual achievement...those of us who prevail today will have done no small thing. The special spirits who have been reserved to live in this time of challenges and who overcome will one day be praised for their stamina by those who pulled handcarts." Neal A. Maxwell
"You are good. But it is not enough to just be good. You must be good for something. You must contribute good to the world. The world must be a better place for your presence. And that good that is in you must be spread to others." Gordon B. Hinkley
I love reading the words and compilations of quotes by Sheri Dew. Basically it's a huge book of inspirational quotes, with her great life experiences thrown in here and there. It is great because that is exactly how I present things. I usually have a quote or a story, then share something personal. Reading this book left me feeling like I am the salt of the earth, and that God does know me, love me unconditionally, and that I do have a purpose here in this mortal testing stage. While I am along my journey I must try to bring my fellow brothers and sisters unto Christ. Therein lies the true joy in this life, and the life to come!
